The Worm Swag review update

This is a follow up on the Early Worm Swag Review.

No long after the previous review of the Swag, I started filling it with shredded cardboard, Worm'ditioner and food scraps. I have not added the worms yet to let the food break down and give time for bacteria to colonise the system.

Getting the food ready with some bedding material. Some of the bedding and Worm'ditioner has already been mixed into the scraps

6 inches of bedding material and then the food scraps is added on top

A bit more Worm'ditioner

I then covered the whole thing with more bedding material

2 days later, I could see that the mesh cover did managed to keep away common house flies, however fruit flies are small enough to go through. I don't think they would have been from the scraps as 48 hours would be too short for the eggs to hatch and larva to become flies.

And you can see how large is the mesh here:

4 days later I added 30 adult and 20 juvenile ENC, I washed them with water first to make sure I'm not introducing some Red Wiggler cocoons as they have infested my breeding trays.

Today, I setup a second Worm Swag to replace one of my last Tumbleweed Worm Factory systems. I believe that despite some weakness of the Swag, it is a much better system and not having to lift heavy trays is a great deal of difference for me.

This second swag will be hosting a mix of Eisenia Fetida (Red Wigglers) and Eisenia Hortensis (European Nightcrawlers).

I just emptied the two trays of my Worm Factory. I emptied the oldest tray first, the vermicompost is actually already ready to be harvested but I'm lazy to sift it to separate the worms so I just added it to the bottom of the Swag and might harvest a little for the compost tea in few weeks.

The second tray which still contains a lot of shredded cardboard and newspaper is emptied on top of that. This will be a good bedding already full of micro-organisms.

I then added more fresh bedding material and then the food scraps on top of it.

A Hessian/Burlap bag was used to protect the system from the sunlight. I will have to monitor this in hot days, might have to move the Swag to another location or make more protection. I actually should have thought about it earlier, but it was cloudy and I only noticed the sun coming through when I have done emptying the trays...

Last time I measured the depth of the Swag it was only 17" (43cm) when a minimum of 20" is required to consider it as a proper CFT (Continuous Flow Through) system. With the weight of the content added, I noticed it was now deeper. My mini tape measure is always with me attached to my car key chain, I measured it again and got almost 19" (48cm). I hope this depth will be kept when the system will be full as this means less chance of getting cocoons and worms at harvest time.

That's it for now. See you soon.
